Who Was Lev Vygotsky?
Lev Vygotsky was a Russian psychologist who emphasized the importance of social interaction and cultural influences in cognitive development.
Unlike theories that focus primarily on individual discovery, Vygotsky argued that learning occurs through collaboration, communication, and guidance from more knowledgeable people.

Zone of Actual Development
These are tasks the learner can complete independently without assistance.

These are tasks the learner cannot yet perform independently but can accomplish with guidance.

These are tasks that remain beyond the learner’s capability, even when support is provided.
- Too difficult at present
- Requires further development
- Future learning target
Example: A beginner attempting advanced algebra concepts.
Scaffolding: Supporting Learning Within the ZPD
Vygotsky’s theory highlights the importance of scaffolding — temporary support provided by a teacher, parent, mentor, or peer.
As learners gain competence, the support is gradually removed until they can perform the task independently.
Demonstrate the task first.
Provide prompts and feedback.
Work alongside the learner.
Gradually remove assistance.
