Curriculum Organization Principles
Scope, Sequence, Continuity, Integration, Articulation, and Balance
Once curriculum designers have selected content, they must decide how to organise it. Curriculum organisation principles are the guidelines that determine how content is arranged, connected, and distributed across a program of study. There are six key principles, and the LET tests all six through classroom and school-level scenario items.
The Six Principles
1. Scope
Scope refers to the breadth and depth of the curriculum — the range of content, topics, and experiences covered at a given level. It answers the question: How much and how deeply should each topic be covered?
Example: A Grade 5 Science curriculum covers topics such as matter, energy, ecosystems, and the solar system. The decision about which topics to include (and exclude) is a scope decision.
2. Sequence
Sequence refers to the order in which content and experiences are arranged. It ensures that learning builds logically from one idea to the next. It answers the question: In what order should topics be taught?
Example: Teaching addition before multiplication, or teaching phonics before reading comprehension. Simple concepts precede complex ones.
3. Continuity
Continuity refers to the vertical repetition of curriculum elements. Key concepts, skills, or ideas recur across grade levels, each time at a greater depth. This is the basis of the spiral curriculum.
Example: The concept of fractions is introduced in Grade 3, revisited with operations in Grade 5, and deepened in algebraic form in Grade 7.
4. Integration
Integration refers to the horizontal linking of content across different subject areas at the same grade level. It allows learners to see connections between disciplines and apply knowledge holistically.
Example: A Grade 4 student connects lessons learned in Science about ecosystems with content from Social Studies about environmental policy and Math about data collection.
5. Articulation
Articulation refers to the coordination and smooth connection between curriculum levels or programs. It ensures there are no gaps or unnecessary repetition as learners move from one grade level or school level to the next. This can be vertical (grade to grade) or horizontal (between parallel programs at the same level).
Example: Grade 6 Mathematics is designed so that what is taught connects smoothly to Grade 7 Mathematics, with no major gaps or redundant reteaching of identical content.
6. Balance
Balance refers to giving appropriate weight to all parts of the curriculum — between subjects, between cognitive and affective domains, and between academic and practical skills. No single subject or domain should dominate at the expense of others.
Example: A school ensures that Science and Math receive the same number of instructional hours as Language and Social Studies, and that values formation is not neglected in favour of academic subjects.
Quick Reference: Which Principle Is Which?

Exam Tip: Continuity and Integration are the most commonly confused pair. Remember: Continuity = same concept, different grade levels (vertical). Integration = different subjects, same grade level (horizontal). If the stem mentions a student connecting two different subjects at the same level, that is Integration. If the same concept reappears and deepens across years, that is Continuity.

Eduardo, a Grade 10 student, is able to connect the lessons he learned in History about the Philippine Revolution with related content from his Filipino Literature subject about Rizal’s novels. Which curriculum organisation principle is taking place?
A. Articulation
B. Balance
C. Continuity
D. Integration
Answer: D
Eduardo is connecting content from two different subjects (History and Filipino Literature) at the same grade level (Grade 10). Horizontal linking of subjects at the same level is the definition of Integration. Choice C (Continuity) is the most common wrong answer because both involve related content — but Continuity is about the same concept reappearing in the same subject across different grade levels, not about connecting two different subjects. Articulation (A) is about smooth transitions between school levels. Balance (B) is about proportionate time and emphasis given to all subjects.

The Grade 6 Mathematics curriculum is carefully designed so that content connects smoothly to Grade 7 Mathematics, ensuring there are no gaps or unnecessary repetition when students transition to Junior High School. Which curriculum organisation principle is being applied?
A. Sequence
B. Continuity
C. Articulation
D. Integration
Answer: C
The key phrase here is “smooth connection” and “no gaps” between Grade 6 and Grade 7 — that is, between two school levels. Coordinating curriculum across a level transition to prevent gaps or unnecessary reteaching is Articulation. Choice B (Continuity) is tempting because it also involves different grade levels — but Continuity focuses on the same concept deepening over time, while Articulation focuses on the handoff or transition between levels being smooth and free of gaps. Choice A (Sequence) is about the order within a single course or subject, not the transition between levels.
